The Artefacts: artwork by

_Alexander Stevenson,

ink & emulsion on stretched parchment.

____

Stevenson has soaked and stretched parchment (animal hide), and created a series of artworks based on museum artefacts from Leicester collections.

Using a limited colour pallette and a drawing style suited to use on parchment, Stevenson has converted the artefacts into symbols and icons. Then, utilising a process known as palimpsest (Gk. "scrape again"), he has scraped away at the images of Leicester's artefacts, removing their 'polished' finish, and demonstrating the wear-and-tear on the real artefacts. In several instances the artefacts are but a fragment of their orriginal size and form, and the palimpsest has removed the drawing beyond these breaks.

Many of the artefacts selected are common-place in UK museum collections, but several are unique to Leicester, and all were found within the city itself.
